Tensions Between Human Subtlety and the Social Abject
Mapping University Theatricality in Sunflowers on the Moon and Purple Interiors for the Dead

The present study brings together a set of reflections on the displacements/transfigurations of the performing subject in relation to the theoretical-methodological proposals aimed at constructing discourses and narratives around the contemporary performing event. Two stage productions from the “Third Season of University Theater 2024” at UAEMéx serve as the framework for analyzing the tensions between the categories of the subtle and the abject. Additionally, reflections will be made on forms of representation and self-presentation as anchoring mechanisms that, when combined, may be examined from an interdisciplinary perspective. To carry out this dialogic exercise, the texts and stagings of Sunflowers on the Moon by Israel Ríos and Purple Interiors for the Dead by José Antonio Flores will serve as key references, alongside Julia Kristeva’s (2004) concept of the abject, José A. Sánchez’s (2012) ethics of representation, Claudio Guillén’s (2005) studies in Comparative Dramatic Literature, and Jorge Dubatti (2011) theoretical cartography of theater.
